Description: Two subspecies are endemic to La Palma, La Gomera and Tenerife. Shrub or small tree up to 10 m. Grayish brown bark. Bright leaves, 6-8 cm long, ovate; edges usually integers but sometimes with a few small spines; apex (top end or tip) obtuse or rounded. Dioecious (male and individuals are individuals females), with vestigial stamens (loss of function) in the female flowers. Petals 4 free or slightly united at the base, white. Small fruit about 1 cm, red drupe.
